Depending on the model, a Compaq Presario might use a SATA hard drive or an IDE drive. The former is found in most models released after 2003, and the latter in earlier PCs. Replacing an IDE drive is a more costly measure for businesses, as the standard has fallen out of use in modern PCs and is therefore more expensive. Regardless of which technology the computer uses, however, the hard drive is fortunately one of the easiest devices to replace in a PC.

Shut down the desktop. Remove the power cable from the unit when the power light turns off.

Unplug all cables and external drives connected to the Presario. Push the power button on the front of the Compaq Presario to drain the system board of electrical charge.

Set the computer on its side. Remove the screws securing the cover panel to the computer case.

Disconnect the power and data cables connected to the drive. If disconnecting SATA cables from the drive, push down on the tab while pulling out the plug. Remove the screws attaching the drive to its cage or press down on the release latch.

Reassemble the desktop computer by reversing the steps used to open the chassis.
